Meet the Staff

Our school is full of exceptional people – students, staff, parents, and extended community – made great by the grace of God living and working in us. Though small, we meet the diverse needs of many different students by the caring dedication of staff and the many different ways the school is supported by those who help us in various ways to realize our mission.

All systems of education have a particular goal in mind - a vision for what students will become - and this goal guides curriculum development, lesson planning, and school culture.

We at YKCS are a community of learners seeking to grow into the fullness of what God would have us be. We are all disciples of Christ. Since education is about becoming a certain kind of person, while learning many facts and picking up useful skills, education at YKCS is about becoming people who love, are wise, good, and joy-filled, delighting in Christ and being led by the Spirit. In this, we hope that students will be prepared for a life of service in the world that will glorify God.

It is our honor to provide leadership to Yellowhead Koinonia Christian School, and we hope you can get a good sense of who we are as you explore the website or come visit us in person,

- Miss Lisa Golding

Administration

Greetings! I'm Mr. Black, and I am thrilled to return for my 4th year at YKCS.

This year, I am excited to continue in my new role as Assistant Principal, while also serving as Athletic Director and Teacher. I look forward to further developing my leadership abilities and contributing to the school community in other capacities.

Over the summer, I married my amazing wife, Katie, and look forward to what this year brings for the two of us. I enjoy coaching and playing basketball, exploring the outdoors, kayaking, taking photos, and spending time with my family in my spare time.

Teaching Staff

Hello there! I am Justine Kerr and I head up the Preschool Program at YKCS. I am a Saskatchewan girl who has called Edson home since 2007. I started teaching at YKCS in 2020. I am a mom to three active kiddos who keep me on my toes. Our family enjoys spending time together on our acreage as well as in the nearby mountains exploring.
I love the preschool age, the children are so engaging, curious, and full of energy. Enriching children's growth in all areas of development has been such a blessing and honor to be a part of. The early years are such an important part of children's success in later years, and we aim to learn through play and exploration in our classroom. Each individual is valued and loved.
I should also mention we have SO much fun together!

I joined the YKCS community after my family moved to Edson in the summer of 2020. I have worked in educational settings for over 20 years in various capacities.

My background is in Community Rehabilitation/ Disability Studies - working with individuals with various abilities. I am looking forward to a wonderful year with the kindergarten classroom  - learning and growing together! Outside of school, I like to hang out with my family! My husband is a pastor at a local church and our two children - Gracie and Joah - keep us busy and having fun!

Hi, I’m Miss Froese and I get to teach grades 1-2 again this year.  I’ve spent 6 of my 10 my elementary teaching years here at YKCS in Edson.
When I’m not in the classroom, I enjoy being out in nature, being a part of Bible studies, reading, doing needlework, and hosting guests. I believe discipleship is a way of life - both to become more like Jesus myself and to be actively involved in pointing those around me to Jesus.

To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.” Jude 24-25

It’s my pleasure to serve you as an elementary teacher in Gr. 3-4 this year.  It’s my fifth year here at YKCS. My wife and kids have lived in Edson since 2020, before that, in Calgary, and we both grew up on farms before that. My kids are aged 15, 12, and 9. We attend Edson Baptist Church.  My family loves sports and travel/culture. I like to coach volleyball, hockey, and baseball.  We love going to BC and Mexico.

During this 2024-2025 school year, I am excited that you have entrusted your kids to us. I believe there is always a powerful dynamic in the classroom and I can’t wait to see us learn and grow this year. Please join me in prayer for your children's academics, friendships, and relationships with God this year!

Hi, I’m Mrs. Wang. This is my second year as a teacher at YKCS. I will be also involved in the distance education program and as the school librarian. I am excited to be back in a teaching capacity and have the opportunity to grow our library program.

Over the summer my husband and I bought a house! It is exciting knowing that we will be calling Edson “home” for the foreseeable future. I enjoy drinking tea, reading, playing board games and going hiking. I have recently picked up gardening and find it very rewarding.

Hi, everyone! I’m Ms. Meyer, the new English teacher at YKCS. I am looking forward to getting to know each student who comes into my classroom this year, and I’m excited to be able to join in the school’s mission to help students grow spiritually as well as academically. I believe that literacy is one of the most important skills that a person can have; not only does it help us build empathy and a deeper understanding of the world around us, but it also helps us more clearly understand ourselves and where we stand in the world.

I have an English degree from the University of Alberta as well as a degree in Secondary Education from The King’s University. I’ve had a lifelong love of reading (of course) and I also love plants, tea, board games, being out in nature, and all manner of nerdy things.
Let’s make this year a good one!

Favorite berry: wild blueberry

Favorite book: Tale of Two Cities

Favorite style of humor?  Really bad science jokes that include math.

Best way to survive my classes?  Pretend to laugh at my cringy joke and pray that I don’t follow it up with another one.

My favorite part of teaching: challenging students to come up with a creative question that thoroughly perplexes me.  So far, I think there have been 3 successful students.  I dare you to try to be the fourth.

Welcome “Bach” to school! My name is Mrs. Reimers and I'm thrilled to be teaching Music at YKCS this year in addition to my role as Homeschool Coordinator. I've been playing piano since I was four years old and teaching lessons since I was thirteen.

I look forward to helping the students at YKCS build their confidence and skills as musicians.
I grew up in Southwestern Ontario and moved to Alberta 12 years ago to pursue my passion for teaching. I feel blessed to live in such an amazing community and have access to the beauty of the mountains. At home, I'm an aspiring gardener and enjoy my role as a homeschool mom and chicken coop manager.

Hi, I’m Joanne Merrifield, and I am excited to be entering into my new role as Home School Facilitator for the Whitecourt area. I look forward to meeting new families and assisting them with their educational goals for their families.

I graduated from the University of Alberta in 2000 and taught in Whitecourt for a few years before taking some time off to raise my children. I subbed with the local school board for 10 years. I have lived in Whitecourt for 25 years and my husband and I own a farm near Whitecourt. I love being active in the outdoors, hiking, paddleboarding, quadding, and skiing (downhill and cross country) are some of my favorite activities.

Educational Assistants

I moved to Alberta about 4 years ago and to Edson last year and have been working as a pharmacy assistant. I got married to my wonderful husband, Colton, in August. This is my first year at YKCS, but I am so excited to be part of this amazing team and to work with my community in a new way!

My husband and I moved to Edson in 2017 with our three children.  They keep us busy with hockey, soccer, gymkhana, 4-H activities, school sports, and visits from university.

I came to YKCS in the fall of 2021, first as a helper in Preschool, then as a facilitator for early literacy, and today I’m an Educational Assistant in Grade 3/4. I have my level two in Early Learning and Child Care and have been involved in working with preschool-aged children for the past 15 years, either as a parent, volunteer, board member, helper, teacher, and sometimes multiple titles at once. This year I am helping coach the Senior High Girls Volleyball team and the Senior Cross Country team. I truly enjoy children and working with the YKCS team. Go Eagles Go!

I am a child of God, wife, mother, and nana. My love for children has always been a big part of my life, from babysitting at the young age of 11, to working in a daycare, and having my own family (3 sons). When my children were school-age, I easily made the decision to work in the school system.

This year makes 23 years as an Educational Assistant, and I am looking forward to serving YKCS once again. My favorite things to do are hanging out with my family, camping, quadding, and fishing.
